Today would have marked the 1 year anniversary of when Newton had his first Oncology visit at CSU. While I am doing a lot better than I would have thought, my heart still hurts badly. I'm trying to rejoice in Newton's life verses grieve in his passing...although sometimes that feels like it is easier said than done.

On the Bone Cancer Yahoo group that I am a member of, folks always talk about "Pennies from Heaven". When I came across the poem, I can't help buy smile.

It is called "Pennies from Heaven" by Charles Mashburn.

I found a penny today
Just laying on the ground
But it's not just a penny
This little coin I've found.

Found pennies come from Heaven
That's what my Grandpa told me,
He said, "Angels always toss them down."
Oh, how I loved that story.

He said, "When an angel misses you
They toss a penny down,
Sometimes just to cheer you up
To make a smile out of your frown."

So don't just pass by that penny
When you're feeling blue,
It may be a penny from Heaven
That an Angel tossed to you.

Last night I got a call from Rainbow Bridge Pet Crematorium. They just wanted to let me know that the picked up Newton. I had CSU do an autopsy so that we could find out a little bit more about how much his cancer had spread, so that the vet students at CSU could have the opportunity to work on a larger dog, and so that some of his tissue could be added to the tissue bank for future research.

I also received Newton's paw print today. The Argus Institute is an amazing group of people who have helped me get through a lot. Thank you to everybody up at CSU!

Newtie...I miss you and love you very much!!!!

Wow, another year older. Boy how times flies. My brother was in town so we all went to Vine Street Pub to celebrate. Hmmm...beer and grilled cheese...who could ask for more on their birthday.

Somebody posted this poem on the Yahoo Bone Cancer Dogs Yahoo Group and I thought it was incredibly cute.

What Cancer Cannot Do!
~Author Unknown~

Cancer is so limited......
It cannot cripple Love
It cannot shatter Hope
It cannot corrode Faith
It cannot destroy Peace
It cannot kill Friendship
It cannot suppress Memories
It cannot silence Courage
It cannot invade the Soul
It cannot steal eternal Life
It cannot conquer the Spirit

Well, tomorrow is the big day and I am starting to feel very, very, very nervous. I can't help but wonder if I am doing the right thing. This is one day that I wish that Newton could speak English. I just want what is best for my puppy. I don't want him to be in pain anymore.

I am trying to be strong in front of Newton so that he doesn't think that anything is wrong, but that is a very hard thing to do.

It was quite a busy day. I wanted to get all of the floor coverings down so that Newton would not slip all over the hard wood floors when he got back on Friday. I had also ordered a new camera, steps to (hopefully, fingers crossed) help him get in and out of the car, and walking harness. I also made a paw print.

Here is to happy thoughts that there are no complications during the surgery and that he recovers quickly.

I came across this poem...it couldn't be more true.

(Author Unknown)

You can't buy loyalty they say:
I bought it though the other day.

You can't buy friendship, tried and true;
Well, just the same, I bought that, too.

I made my bid, and on the spot,
Bought love and faith, and a whole job lot

Of happiness. So, all in all,
The purchase price was pretty small,

I bought a simple trusting heart
That gave devotion from the start.

If you think these things are not for sale -
Buy a brown-eyed pup with a wagging tail!
